In order to sell erotica on Amazon, you need to understand the customer buying steps.
To be honest, this is something I really never considered when I first started writing.
And it really showed in my sales results (which were lackluster to be frank).
So it’s something I want to discuss today: more specifically the customer buying experience.
And this is SUPER important to understand because you need to master each step of this process to get consistent sales for your pen name.
There are 3 main steps to the customer buying experience:
#1: Search results
When the customer wants something on Amazon, they search for it via the toolbar.
In general, a potential customer already knows that kind of book they want.
So they type whatever erotica niche they want and then Amazon populates the search results with their algorithm.
The first thing is the customer searches Amazon for the niche they want. Something like gay erotica.
This is why having the proper keywords is super important.
In fact, keywords are probably one of the most important factors of your success when it comes to making money as an erotica author.
Keywords can be the difference between landing on page 1 of the search results and page 100.
If your books DON’T show up in the search results you’ve already lost the battle.
In general, your goal is to try to land as many books as possible within the first 10 pages of the search results.
If you can do that, there’s no reason why you won’t be able to make decent money with your catalog of books.

#2: Drawing the customer in
Think about the last time you searched for something you needed on Amazon.
What did you do after you typed in the product that you wanted? \
You scrolled through the results looking at the product photos and the product titles, right?
Well, that’s EXACTLY what erotica readers are doing here.
The customer will look through the search results and anything that interests them will get a click.
They will likely click through several books that interest them.
So, what is important at this stage?
At this stage, the customer is primarily looking at the book titles and book covers.
As a result, you MUST ensure that your book titles and book covers are on point.
This means your book cover is professional looking, easy to read, and will draw the reader in.

#3: Closing them with the description
Finally, when the customer clicks through on the link in the search results, they will go to your book product page.
Here, they will take a closer look at your book cover, but more importantly read your description.
At this point, the customer will make the decision on whether or not they want to buy the book (typically on the stop).
As a result, it’s super important to make sure your description closes the deal and makes the customer hit that buy button.

Okay, as a quick recap, the three things you need to master to sell erotica on Amazon include:
1. Good keywords to ensure your book shows up in the search results
2. A good book cover and title to make sure the customer clicks through to the product page
3. And finally, you need a description to reel them in and get them to buy the book.
If you master each step in the process, it would be hard to fail as an erotica author.
And the best way to master these steps is practice. You need to publish many books and see what works and experiment around.
