Do I have to be a good erotica writer to make money self publishing on Amazon?

That’s one question that people ask me all the time so I figured I would take the time to answer that today.

And if you go on writing forums or ask “hardcore” writers you’ll see this is a really hot topic sometimes….But I’m willing to address it 🙂

Many other hardcore or successful authors (especially those with fancy English college degrees) may disagree with me, but here’s the deal:

NO!

You DO NOT need to be a great writer to be able to make money.

Does being a good writer help?

YES, of course!

…BUT writing is only a small part of being a successful author.

There are many inputs in the equation of success and not all of it has to do with pure writing skills. 

In my experience, you only need to be “good enough” in order to make money writing erotica on Amazon.

My story with writing…

I’ve always had a tough time writing

In fact, if you asked me when I was in high school that I would be making money writing for a living, I would have laughed in your face.

Writing was always difficult for me…and not just because of the grammar, but I had a lack of creativity.

And I barely passed English class throughout high school (sometimes barely getting by with C’s).

Anyways, my mom was not too happy with my grades to say the least haha…

Anyways in college, I avoided taking English classes like the plague. In fact, I only took the bare minimum with the easiest teaches in the entire school!

But anyways, here’s the important thing…writing is just a SMALL part of what it takes to be a successful author.

I’ve read many books by great writers and then check out their catalog. Most of their books don’ even crack the 300,000 book rankings on Amazon!

Why you only need to be “Good Enough”

If all you had to do to be successful is being able to write well, the best authors in the world would have been the ones that aced high school and college English..not bozos like me who barely skated by. 

Here’s the thing that most people won’t admit.

You only need to be “good enough” when it comes to writing. 

Sure, you probably won’t get very far if you have a ton of grammar mistakes in your books and write like a second grader.

BUT…If you can build suspense, write in a decent story that flows, and create a “dirty” sex scene, you’ll do pretty well.

And to be honest, none of that really requires you to be an amazing author. 

What is often as important as your writing skills is:

• Writing in a niche that people actually read (not a dying niche)
• Researching and using keywords that will get you sales
• Designing book covers that look professional
• …and marketing and promoting your content

In reality, most “good writers” won’t have any of the skills I just mentioned above.

So if you are even average with the skills above, you’ll be able to outrank and out earn “good writers”.

Do you have to be a good writer? – Final Thoughts

One thing I don’t want people to get is discouraged about their writing skills.

Being a good writer is only a small part of the equation to being a successful erotica writer and making money on Amazon.

As a self published author you ARE NOT just a writer.

You run an entire business.

This means you are the marketing specialist, cover design artist, SEO keyword guru, and the CEO. You have to wear a bunch of hats and learn a wide variety of skills to succeed.

So keep that in mind if you think your writing skills are going to stop you from making money. It wont! 

It didn’t stop me and it hasn’t stopped my students as well.
