One of the cool things about writing erotica is that you can dominate small niches on Amazon KDP.
I found this out by accident when I first started writing erotica.
When most people target niches, they tend to target very broad niches like BDSM.
The BDSM niche is super big and really popular now because of 50 Shades of Grey. As a result, everyone and their grandmother is writing BDSM stories.
In fact, the sub-genres of the BDSM niche are bigger than other erotica niches on Amazon!
As a result, it is a good idea to “niche down” – meaning focus your effort on a smaller segment of the market.
And if you follow my strategy, there’s a good chance you could totally dominate these small niches.
Focusing on smaller niche markets
As a short story erotica author, you can truly focus on a small niche and dominate that category. That’s actually something I did when I first started.
So, what do I mean by this?
Well, let’s say you identify a really good niche that has about 2,000 books in the search results.
A lot of people would say “wow that niche is super tiny, I could never make money here”.
However, if you focus solely on this niche for one or two months, you could really dominate it.
For example, if you write just 50 books for that one niche, you will own 2.5% of the market.
That’s A LOT for one self published author!
I’m betting most people wouldn’t have more than 20 books for that one niche.
Owning 2.5% of the market is HUGE.
That means when anyone is searching for that genre (via keywords), you have own 2.5% of the market and will have a super good chance on appearing in the first 10 pages of the search results.
Pretty cool to think about, right?

Finding these small markets
Finding these small markets isn’t always the easiest thing.
Here’s what I generally do to try and find these markets. First, I take a look at some of the larger niche categories.
I generally like to focus on “evergreen niches” – meaning niches that really don’t “go out of style”.
Next, I will play around with the Amazon search bar suggestions for a while to find the “sweet spot”.
What I mean by this is I want a good amount of search results for a particular keyword phrase in that one niche.
When I find something that looks promising with around 2,000 – 5,000 results I’ll do some more research.
Yes, I know this isn’t an exact science, but it’s a process I have used many times to identify small niches that I can totally dominate.
Dominating Small Niches on Amazon KDP – Final Thoughts
Overall, targeting small erotica niches on Amazon is a great idea.
These niches are typically too small for large publishers and big name authors to target, BUT they are perfect for small time self published authors like us.
Hopefully you will be able to replicate some of the tips in this post.
Good luck!
