If you have been a reader of my blog or my newsletter, you’ll know that I stress consistency when it comes to getting erotica sales.
Consistently publishing books is the most important thing you can do to become successful. Unfortunately, it’s also the hardest thing to do.
Once you have built up a big catalog of books and readers, you can start publishing less (once every few weeks or even longer than that) and still see big sales.
But to get to that point, you need to put in the work. I HIGHLY recommend publishing 2 – 3 books per week.
I know…many of you are probably saying “BUT Andrew, I don’t have time to publish 2 books a week!”
And I realize many of you are busy people with jobs/careers, kids, and a whole lot of other stuff.
Don’t worry, publishing 2 erotica stories a week actually sounds a lot harder than it really is!
Erotica book story length
Before I go further, I want to talk about one thing first…which is book length.
When it comes to selling erotica, you don’t have to write full blown novels. In fact, short stories often do a lot better.
I would recommend keeping your stories around 3,000 to 5,000 words.
So to publish 2 books a week, you need to write 6,000 to 10,000 words per week. This equates to 850 – 1,400 words per day!
The key to publishing 2 books a week on Amazon KDP
There are two keys to success when it comes to publishing consistently: (1) creating a good outline and (2) break up the writing into chunks.
Creating a good outline
If you’re just writing on the fly with whatever comes to mind, it will be VERY hard to get your words onto the screen. Trust me, I know from first hand experience!
In college, I would often write papers the night right before they were due. My thoughts were all over the place and I basically wrote whatever came to my mind first.
I don’t need to tell you how bad my college English grades were…let’s just say I’m lucky to have graduated!
I like breaking my stories into three key parts: beginning, middle, and end.
After that, I like to have a few bullet points for each section of the story.
The beginning should be about how the main characters meet.
The middle part should cover some sort of conflict within the story (i.e. a boss wanting to sleep with his secretary).
Finally, the end of the story should be the sex scene.
Once you have each section figured out, you’ll be able to write much faster and the story will flow A LOT better!
Break up the writing
Not a lot of people can write 2,000+ words in one sitting. And this includes a lot of veteran writers. It’s just hard to concentrate for that long without getting distracted.
That’s why I like to break up my writing into chunks. It’s much easier to write 2,000 words a day by writing 1,000 words in the morning when you wake up and then another 1,000 before you go to bed.
I did that for months when I first started writing erotica. I’d get up 20 – 30 minutes earlier and knock out 1,000 words or so before going in to work. And I’d carve out some time at night to finish the rest of my daily word count.
By splitting up the work, you’ll be a lot more refreshed and able to tackle your daily word count goal.
How to find extra time to write erotica
In addition to waking up early (or staying up late) to write your books, there are a ton of other ways to make time.
Here are some hacks I’ve used to write more erotica stories to sell on Amazon:
1. Waiting in line:
If you’re waiting in line at the grocery store, waiting to see the doctor, or wherever, bust out your phone and start writing.
Sure, typing on your phone isn’t the most efficient way to write, but it’s better than nothing! Next time you’re waiting for something while running errands, get your phone out and get typing!
2. At the gym:
But wait…isn’t the gym for you know…working out?
Yes, but if you’re doing cardio like riding a bike it is the perfect bust out your phone and start writing that story.
This kills two birds with one stone! You’re getting a workout and writing a story that will make money. It’s like getting paid to workout 🙂
3. At work:
Despite what people say, you’re rarely working 100% of the time at work. There will be periods in which you have nothing to do.
Instead of surfing YouTube for cat videos, bust out your phone and start getting those words down! You can actually write a lot at work during your downtime.
Final Thoughts
Overall, publishing consistently is one of the best ways to improve your erotica sales.
