Pricing is incredibly important to become a successful short story erotica author on Amazon. If you price your books too high, you won’t sell very many copies.
On the other hand, if you price your books too low you’re leaving money on the table!
This blog post is made for self published authors who want to understand how they should price their erotica on Amazon to make the most money.
Two options to pricing erotica short stories on Amazon
In the erotica market, there are two acceptable ways of pricing your book: $0.99 or $2.99.
Under the $0.99 route, you will make $0.35 per sale (because you will only earn a 35% royalty).
Under the $2.99 route, you will make $2.00 per sale (because you earn a 70% royalty).
This is the classic economic problem of price and volume.
If you price your eBooks lower, your unit sales will increase. If you price your short stories higher, your unit sales will decrease.
The key is to finding the right balance to maximize overall sales!
Sales = Price * Unit Volume
So…what is the best route?
How to price your erotica eBooks
How should I price my books?!
This is one question I asked myself when I first started publishing erotica. I read a ton of books on the subject and scoured all over Amazon to compare prices of best selling self published erotica authors.
Here’s the conclusion I came to.
Romance should be published at $0.99, while erotica should be published at $2.99.
A lot of people confuse romance and erotica.
Romance stories are longer (like novel length), while erotica is obviously shorter. Most romance readers want “bang for their buck” in terms of the amount of content.
That’s why most romance books are priced at $0.99.
When it comes to erotica short stories, customers are actually WILLING to pay up to $2.99 to get their hands on a dirty story!
The math behind eBook pricing!
As I mentioned before, if you price your book at $0.99, you will earn a $0.35 royalty.
If the book is priced at $2.99, you will earn a $2.00 royalty.
This means if your book is priced at $0.99, you will have to sell 6 copies for every one you sell at $2.99!
Let me tell you something, it’s much harder to sell 6 people one copy of a book than it is to sell one person one copy of a book!
How to price bundles!
One question I get asked a lot is how to price book bundles.
Bundling basically means you are combining several previously published stories into one new combined book. This is a great way to monetize old stories that might not be selling so hot anymore.
Now, when it comes to bundling, customers expect some sort of discount! That’s fine as the profit-per-book on a bundle is much higher.
In fact, bundles are often some of my best sellers!
When it comes to bundling, there are no hard and fast rules to book pricing. However, I have studied how pricing impacts the demand of my bundles.
