People email me all the time asking about which erotica niche to write in. And rightfully so, because picking a niche can have a big impact on your sales.
Pick a niche that’s too competitive and you won’t make much money.
Pick a niche that’s too small and it’ll be hard to scale!
By the way…check out this blog post for the best erotica niches!
Anyways, I’ve been asked that question about 100 times now.
And I find it interesting that no one has ever asked me the opposite question: which erotica niche should I avoid?
So that’s the topic I wanted to discuss in today’s blog post…the worst erotica niche to write in!
The Worst Erotica Niche To Write In
So the interesting thing about the worst erotica niche is that most beginners are writing in this niche (whether that be intentional or unintentional).
So what is it?
Well, the worst niche is just a normal short sex story without any kinks, without anything interesting. Just two people meeting and having sex.
BORING!
If you write these kinds of stories it’ll be very hard to sell ANY books (for reasons I’ll talk about in a second).
The most obvious is people looking to buy erotica are kinky! They aren’t your run of the mill vanilla sex people.
Second of all, if people wanted boring normal sex, they would pick up a romance book, which has much more developed characters and a deeper plot.
Your short erotica book won’t stand up to a book like that.
Incredibly Competitive Keywords
Another reason why it’s a bad idea to write a vanilla sex story is because the keywords will be super competitive.
If you don’t have a specific niche you’re targeting, it will be VERY hard to find good keywords to use.
For example, let’s just say you have a “normal story” – a woman has been lusting for her boss for so long and finally shacks up after he breaks up with his girlfriend.
With that story, it would be hard to select keywords because it’s just a plain sex story.
And you’d be forced to compete with hyper competitive keywords (meaning your book will likely never get discovered by customers).

If you’re writing a cuckold story, you can use keywords like “cuckold or hotwife.”
If you’re writing a BDSM story, you can use keywords like “BDSM” or “Alpha”.
But what keywords do you use for a normal sex story?
If you use “sex” or “romance” as a keywords, good luck. Those keywords are SUPER competitive.
And that means your book will never be found in the search results, which means no sales!
When it comes to keywords, you want to target ones that are non-competitive.
Instead, let’s say the story was something more like:
A woman has been lusting for her black boss for years, and finally decides to go after him even though he’s married.
NOW you’re getting somewhere!
Now you can target keywords like “interracial” and “cheating” or “cuckquean”.
Hell, you could probably even add a BDSM element of the story and then target some of those relevant keywords.
The point is, we want to avoid the “plain vanilla sex stories”.
Spice things up by including kinks, different races/nationalities, etc.
This will make your story a lot more interesting than “boy meets girl and has sex”.
Final Thoughts On The Worst Erotica Niche
Overall, writing a plain vanilla sex story is the worst erotica niche to write in.
The niche is one of the most over-saturated. Pages and pages of Amazon search results are filled with these types of stories.
Plus, writing a vanilla story like this means it will be hard to target non-competitive keywords.
So, do yourself (and your wallet) a favor and pick a kinky niche instead. It’ll be MUCH easier to make sales that way 🙂
