Many people go down the hard road when writing eBooks on Amazon. Take it from someone who has been writing eBooks for ~18 months now. I’ve written self help books, personal finance books, finance books, and even erotica.
Some of the most popular niches for self published authors include:
- Self help
- Life hacks
- Dating
- Confidence
- How to make money
- …and motivation books
The truth is, those markets are highly saturated. You WON’T be making much money if you’re writing in those markets.
Unfortunately, those books are dominated by people who have big followings. They have widely successful blogs. They have email lists with thousands and thousands of subscribers. Or they might have a highly successful podcast.
The point is, those authors have big audiences and you don’t. Competing against them as a new and unknown author is an uphill battle.
However, I still see people making the same mistake when cracking the ebook market.
Here’s why you should ditch writing “how to” or “life hack” books:
1. No audience? Good luck!
You need a big built-in audience to be successful with traditional eBooks.
To truly make a ton of money writing in saturated markets like self help, fitness, or general “how to” markets, you need to have a huge email list, blog, or some kind of following.
Sure, you spend two weeks researching and writing a 10,000 page book and throw it on Amazon. You might get $100 or $150 sales per month if you’re lucky, but it’s not going to generate the level of passive income you’re after.
It is very difficult to compete with guys (and ladies) who have a widely successful blog or a 20,000 subscriber newsletter.
Their books will likely rank on the first page of Amazon search results and yours will probably be on page 3 or 4 if you’re lucky.
Without a built-in audience, your books will never reach scale.
You’re already at a disadvantage right off the bat!
2. Time consuming research
It takes A TON of time to research and write a book. Trust me, I know this from first hand experience.
A while ago, I decided to write some books about investing and finance. These are all topics I’m highly familiar in (as I work in that field).
However, it still took me about 2 – 3 weeks to plan, write, and edit a 10,000 page book. Imagine how long it would take you to write a book if you didn’t know the topic that well!
In contrast, I am able to write a short erotica story (2,500 – 3,000 words) in about two hours or less. That’s a HUGE difference in time!
3. Getting reviews sucks!
If you write in traditional ebook categories you’ll need reviews to be successful. If you’re just starting out you’re going to have to pretty much beg for them. I’ve found that less than 5% of customers end up leaving a review.
Unfortunately, Amazon reviews are very important to potential customers. They provide “social proof”–i.e. if it has good reviews it must be a good product!
I’ve gone down that rabbit hole before. I’ve posted on forums, offered incentives, and cold emailed bloggers to get reviews for my books.
That entire process is not only time consuming, but very tiring. Begging for reviews sucks!
Write Erotica Instead!
Many of you are probably asking the $1,000,000 question: Why Sell Erotica?
Writing erotica for profit is much easier than writing self help or life hack books.
Selling erotica requires ALMOST no work at all. In fact, you don’t even have to be a good writer.
I’m a very crappy writer. I got mostly B’s and C’s in English class.
Yet, I’m still able to consistently make $1,000+ a month selling erotica on Amazon (all PASSIVE INCOME)!
4 reasons to sell erotica
1. Stories are quick and easy: Short erotica books sell well on Amazon. You can sell a $2.99 short erotica book that only contains 2,000 words.
In comparison, many traditional life hack or self help books also sell for $2.99 (but are usually 10,000+ words plus.
By my estimate, it would take at least 20 – 30 hours to research, write, and edit a traditional self help book.
I can write a short erotica story in less than 2 hours that will make $20+ a month in passive income.
So in the time it would take me to write a traditional ebook, I can write 10 – 15 erotica stories!
2. You don’t need a built in audience: There are A TON of people looking to buy erotica on Amazon. You don’t need a built in audience to be successful. I made $190 my first full month with no email list or blog to promote my books.
Erotica is one special market where you don’t need a built-in audience to be successful. Totally new and unknown authors can come in and make money right off the bat.
3. You don’t need reviews: Lots of my best selling erotica books sell month after month without reviews. Most readers will not leave reviews for obvious reasons. As a result, this levels the playing field for all authors.
4. No promotions necessary: Sex sells. It’s as simple as that. You don’t really need to promote an erotica book. I literally hit publish and never look back. The sales just roll in. It’s fantastic!
I have never spent a dime on marketing for my erotica books!
